Hello friends! We need you now more than ever! Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 4 at 3:15 in SMSU 262, we will be given our last chance to argue for next year’s budget. We had a let down last month at our deliberation when we were funded a ZERO initial budget. Why? The SFC, or Student Fee Committee, had concerns that our student group was run by the department. They also questioned our large increase in budget request from last year. We need to SHOW them why we need more money! We need to bring as many of you as possible to be physically present and prove that our membership has grown tremendously from last year! If you’re on campus at all tomorrow, please consider stopping by and showing your support! We want to overwhelm them with all 100+ people on the AIGA email list! Let’s pack the room until we can’t fit anymore! Sorry about the late notice! That’s the typical way this budget process has progressed… Soon it will be over and we’ll be able (fingers crossed!) to host more lecturers, have more studio visits, organize workshops, send students to conferences, give student scholarships for competition entry fees, give student scholarships to offset printing costs, and loads more! Come support your student group! Thank you.

Congratulations Benjamin, Sean, Abbie and Julia & Morgan. After much too much deliberation, your design proposal for the sustainability fashion show was selected by the marketing students as the winner. You will share equally in the $250 cash prize. Your checks have been written and will be delivered to Prof Charman as soon as one last detail is accomplished.

The competition guidelines stated that the winning entry would be provided on a DVD/CD in a useable, high-res format. Please provide this to Prof Charman before the end of this term and I will forward your money to her. Again, thank you for the great work. All six entries were very good. Sorry we do not have more money to give but we expected the prize to go to one or two people.

it feels like we’re at a spot where a lot of people are slow starting their re-cap project and grumbling along. please realize you have all the freedom you want to make the last project exactly what you missed in what we have done sofar. you can pick any design aspect of both projects and concentrate purely on form, make fluff, expand on earlier made work, or jump sideways and make a good portfolio piece.

sofar i have pretty much held your hand going through a lot of concept work, looking at what design can be, the readings are context to all the projects. now you can finish up the class by showing me what you like about design, what you like about form, pick a reading that inspires your design work, and i will work with you. and let it make sense in your class long process that you document on the blog.

we have 2 more weeks to let it come together, let’s talk on thursday as a group.

so i was stuck in an office this morning but it is 9.45 and i’m here. it’s fine you are all gone, i hope you’ll take your time to work at home today and come thursday with things to talk about. i’ll be here for the rest off class today, come on by if you want any discussion about the re-cap project.

there are quite a lot of people who’s blog is not upto date, some of you have not posted anything about the the last project alltogether. please realize that your grade is partly about your process, and that your blog is a documentation of your process during the class, and will be 25 points of the overall 100 points available for the class.

reading 4, Human Centered Design

A team at IDEO led by Tatyana Mamout and Jessica Hastings has been working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently to develop a toolkit to help NGO’s apply human centered design methodologies to the work they do with small holder farmers. IDE, one of the NGO’s supported by Gates, collaborated closely with the team and co-developed the toolkit and tested it in the field. read more >

sustainability student grants

PSU’s Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices invites the campus community to help put sustainability in action at a special event on Thursday, February 5.

Waste reduction. Food systems. Research into health and the environment. Public art as education. These are just some themes from the more than 50 grant proposals by student-led teams now being considered for funding by the Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices, through the Miller Foundation Grant.

At the Student Idea Generator event, the PSU community will have an opportunity to learn more about this creative and diverse portfolio of student-initiated sustainability projects–and to get involved.

Students will present their ideas, based on previously submitted grant proposals, in an informal gallery setting. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to interact, exchange ideas, and build new partnerships around these projects.

The event will be held in SMSU 328 from noon to 2 p.m. on February 5. Please encourage others to attend and help shape the future of sustainability at PSU. Admission is free and open to the public.

project 3 the re.cap

ok, the third project, the re-cap project, will let you re-vist particular issues we have looked at in class before in the semester which you want to explore further. This is a private project, where you have full controll over all design aspects etc, and is graded with 10 points for the project and an important part of your process which is graded with 20 points (see grading in the objectives post). As it re.visits, re.caps, re.examines some of the fast passed issues in this class. plus, you get to look at form carefully.

class 1 feb 19
start the re.cap project, work in class to define & sketch, and post on your blog what it is you will be doing for this project

class 2 feb 24
work on the re.cap project, don’t leave the class without showing me your sketches

class 3 feb 26
crit

class 4/7
maybe independent work time due to a mandatory course i have to take, reach me through e-mail, post work on the blogs or come by at night in the computer lab at nueburger computer labs tuesday and thursday nights 6-9 pm

class 9
tuesday morning of the finals week we will have a crit, if needed thursday again. i want to finish this class up well and want to take the time to talk through all the recap projects with you.

fashion show project update

Hey Luke - So sorry to have not contacted you earlier. The design activity was a stunning success. And the Cannes event was huge…about 140 people. Your students made it tough to make a decision because of the quantity and quality of the proposals.

Anyhoo, we have been buried with other AMA activities but will be reviewing the proposals, making a decision and announcing the winner as soon as we can. In the mean time, please extend out thanks to your students for a job well done. As soon as I get their names, we will send them a thank you note.

Do your students want the boards back or can we keep them for a while? If they want the back, can we get each design package on a disc? I’m handing the reigns as AMA faculty adviser over to Jill Mosteller who will taking over in late Feb. She will be in touch as/if we need you. Thanks again. It was perfect.
